AI and the Society of the Future: Human–AI interaction in healthcare

The project AI and the Society of the Future, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (total project volume €1.5M), aimed to improve clinical decision-making and reduce medical errors by increasing the usability of AI-enabled health technology. Providing healthcare professionals with better technology should not only reduce error rates but also free up time for direct patient interaction.

From 2023 to 2025, I was Principal Investigator of the Munich work package, taking over from Prof. Dr. Susanne Gaube on her appointment to University College London, and co-led the Human–AI Interaction Group at LMU Munich with Prof. Dr. Eva Lermer. The team included one postdoc, two PhD students, and several research assistants, and we collaborated with partners at MIT and the University of Toronto.

Selected outputs

  • A meta-analysis of the predictors of clinicians’ intention to use AI-enabled clinical decision support systems ( JMIR, 2024)
  • Reviews of AI-enabled precision psychiatry patents ( 2023) and regulated AI decision support products for mental healthcare ( Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, 2025)
  • Mixed-methods, interview, and experimental studies with mental health practitioners, ophthalmologists, psychotherapy trainees, and patients – see the publications page
